How Often Do You Dream?
I don't know about anyone but myself and a few close family members and friends, but I don't seem to dream as much as in my younger years. Nowadays, the dream has to be a pretty dramatic one for me to even remember. I also know that when I was younger, I would forget my dreams very soon after I woke up. If I didn't tell someone about it, it seemed to disappear unless it was a reoccurring nightmare or something. I spoke with my brother and asked him how often he dreamed when he slept and his dreams had become less frequent, as well. After hearing the same thing from a few other family members and close friends, I began to wonder where all the dreams had gone.
It's Actually an Epidemic
Not too long ago, I ran across an article about a psychology paper that had terms inside like "dream deprivation" and "wake-centric". In this paper, the author made speaks about REM sleep and how important it is. Basically, if you don't get REM sleep, your body acts the same as someone who is sleep deprived. This leads to fatigue, irritability, weight gain, or even hallucinations and lowered motor skills. To some experts, dreams are just a byproduct of rapid eye movement sleep. To other experts, dreams are a psychological phenomenon that has yet to be explained scientifically. One thing they agree about is that people are dreaming less and less.
Put Down that Phone Before Bed
Light from electronic devices like phones, TVs, and tablets can interfere with the REM process. Even streetlights can mess with this part of your sleep. Other things that can impede your ability to enter this stage of rest where fantasy comes alive is alcohol and drug use. Even sleeping pills can cause your body to prefer the lighter stages of sleeping instead of the more beneficial deeper sleep. Our wake-centric lifestyles demand that we sleep as little as possible because of the push to be productive. It's almost as if we've forgotten how necessary resting is for our bodies.
From what I have gathered by stumbling around the internet for information, what you sleep on makes a huge difference in how well you rest. Mattresses are key and while there is a lot of debate about what type is better, it's more about your body and how well the bedding works for you. Depending on the quality, a mattress will last for around five to ten years. If you notice a decline in how well you feel each morning, you may want to consider buying a new one. If you are an active sleeper, you might even look into getting a bigger bed so that you can roll around all you want in your sleep.
