Exploring the History of the Loveseat

When you hear anything with love in the name, you are going to assume the item in question has a lot to do with amorous activity, right? Things like love stories, love motels, The Love Boat, or even love potions all have to do with people expressing their affections. So, it would be pretty obvious to assume that the loveseat was invented to bring people closer together. However, contrary to the namesake, the loveseat's origins aren't steeped in any romantic history. 

Loveseat is Just a Wide Seat

No one really knows who invented the loveseat, however, during the 18th century, wider seats became much more popular. They weren't designed for two people to sit side by side closely, but more for the ladies of the time to have a place to sit that would accommodate their ridiculously wide gowns and dresses they would wear. Over time, the dress fashions became much slimmer and the need for an oversized chair for one person went away. However, while this was happening, couples who wanted to sit closer together for conversation or courting purposes would use these "loveseats" to talk (but not touch!). Hence the name loveseat gained popularity and went on to become a household name.

By the time the 19th century was rolling on through, the design changed somewhat. The S-loveseat was designed so that the occupants could sit side by side, yet be separated by an armrest. This helped keep sitting side by side from being scandalous. However, by the time the 20th century came around, the loveseat had turned into its current form which is basically a baby sofa.

Spring Has Sprung - More Time Outdoors

Longer Days and Warmer Weather This winter has had its ups and downs. Just when you think it was over, here came another week or more of cold weather. I guess winter just wasn't ready to loosen its icy grip just because an underground dwelling rodent said it was time.
