Dinner Time is the Best Time

Still My Favorite Time

When I was a kid, dinner time was an event. We all waited until everyone was seated and then we had our prayer before everyone started passing the food around. There were certain traditions depending on the meal. Mom and Dad had their favorite piece of chicken so we children made sure to let them choose what they wanted. Sometime we would have various toppings and we would eat what we called "Cracker Snacks". Dad would top his crackers with sardines and I would pretend I couldn't smell them.

We ate almost every meal together as a family. We spent the time eating and talking (sometimes we got reminded that doing both at the same time was rude...) about our day. My dad worked long hours and my mom took care of all four of us children. so this was our opportunity to spend time telling each other about how our days went. I feel like it brought us closer together as a family unit. However, as we children got older and reached our teens, some of us had jobs we worked in the evenings and the family gathering around the dinner table got smaller.

I looked back fondly at that time of my life and I want to recreate that bonding experience with my family. Just a half hour or longer spent together can really allow a family the opportunity to express frustrations and troubles or to talk about triumphs and similar things with each other. My hope is to give uninterrupted time and opportunity for my children to talk with us and possibly develop similar memories like I have of my old family dinners.
