Let's Talk Shop About Coffee
Coffee And Table's Namesake
I've come to find over time that there are certain things in this world that people either love or hate. Things like peppermint ice cream, eggnog, The Big Bang Theory, and coffee all may fit in that area where there seems to be very little middle ground. I know that my experience with this subject matter is limited to my own personal exposure and that it's anecdotal, but Bear with me for a second.
Coffee, I like it. While some people have their own preference as to how they like it prepared, I will take it all manner of ways. From blended to black, I drink it almost any way and in between that you can think of. However, in my life, I have run across very few people who think that coffee is just, you know, ok. Most people either love or hate it like I stated previously. And, while I admit I do have some interesting questions that pop randomly into my head, this question is derived from my love of the beverage. What's the deal with coffee tables?
The Coffee Table Paradox
I am sure that a cursory glance on the internet would help me figure out where coffee tables originated, but my question has more to do with how they are used today. For instance, in my house, the coffee table rarely actually has any coffee on it. I think this has more to do with the fact that drinks aren't allowed in the living room. However, even before this new tyrannical rule was imposed, the table had always been more of a catch-all for things. Remotes for the electronics, books, coasters, and other random items would find rest upon the coffee table. And even if I had a cup of coffee, it was usually sitting on whatever end table was closest to my side of the sofa. I've realized now that this table with its particular name was not really living up to it. I mean, the end tables are probably called that because they are usually smaller and sit at the end of something. Were coffee tables called that because it was some social faux pas back in the day to have anything other than coffee sitting on it?
The sad thing about the table that sits between you and your TV is that you hardly know its there when you are using it. However, if you are ever in an instance where you do not have a coffee table, you become acutely aware that there is not one in your presence. Therein lies the paradox of this mysterious piece of furniture. You need one, but you don't quite know what you need it for...
