I Remember Grandpa's Recliner

Memories of the Giant Recliner

I have many fond memories of when I was a child. Of all the recollections, one that stands out predominately is my memory of my grandpa's recliner. I would sit on his lap, and we would watch episodes of Wheel of Fortune in the evenings when we would come to visit. Other times, he would play around with me and "count my ribs" which actually was just a way to tickle me until I begged for mercy. On or around Christmas, we would sit together and listen to music on the record player as various artists sang their renditions of classic songs. One other thing sticks out in my mind, and that was how giant I thought that recliner was. Now, I wasn't allowed to sit in it by myself if my grandpa was around. Everyone in the house knew that was his chair. Most people know that unspoken rule; dad or grandpa's chair is his to sit in. Some families that I was friends with went so far that no one could sit in the chair even if dad or grandpa weren't around. One of my friend's dad also explained that if anyone sat in his chair, hed know because he could feel the imprint you would leave. However, this wasn't how my grandpa was. He would just give you a look, and you knew it was time to move.

When I sat in that armchair, I would feel so small. I couldn't wait to be big enough to be able to push back and make the chair recline, I would think to myself. Well, after my little sister was born, she became the new second occupant. I wouldn't say I was cast aside or anything, but I had gotten older and bigger, and even at a young age, I knew that was just part of life. I watched from the sofa, now, as my little sister got her ribs counted and she would laugh. Still, that chair seemed so massive to me. When I had grown almost into my preteen years, and my little sister was cognizant enough to understand the rules of Wheel of Fortune, our grandpa came up with a fun game. He would randomly say that if either one of us could solve a puzzle before him, we would get a dollar. If he answered it before us, we would watch him as he held the dollar and flapped it like bird's wings as it flew back to his wallet. I never was able to guess it before him and watched that dollar fly back to its home over and over.

The Older I Got

As I grew older, that recliner began to shrink. It seemed it got smaller and smaller every time I sat in it. Eventually, my grandparents bought some property and moved out to retire on a farm, which was their dream. During the move, I had grown big enough and strong enough to pick the chair up by myself. At that moment, the magic of the giant recliner was gone. The wonderment of a small child was overtaken by the reality of adulthood and the inevitability of growing up. I guess the good news is that when I picked up the recliner, a lot of change fell out and I was told to keep it. I finally got some money from the chair even if it wasn't won by solving a game show puzzle.
