How Often do you Go to the Movies?

Movie Seats or Sofa?

Domestic ticket sales are dwindling here in the United States and movie makers are relying more and more on foreign markets to drive up the sales of tickets to the shows they produce. One of the reasons that experts on the subject say is responsible for this decrease in sales is that people are just as happy to sit in and watch something streaming from the comfort of their own living room. Another supposed reason for the drop in sales is that people feel like the movie-going experience itself is kind of outdated. For that reason, some more and more theaters are upping the ante by having more options from the concession stand and reclinable seating. I, however, have a different take on the whole "dip in ticket sales" phenomenon.

I think that Hollywood is out of ideas. Now that practically all movie production companies are owned by huge Hollywood conglomerates, execs are so scared to take a chance on something outside what they think is the box that all we are getting is sequels, reboots, and remakes of classic movies and franchises. I know that the current blockbusters typically involve comic book characters, but that just proves my point. All they are doing is taking an idea that has already been done before and turning it into a multi-million dollar production. This bankruptcy of fresh ideas and imagination has made the industry so stagnant that people are noticing the trend and possibly just don't care that there is going to be the umpteenth X-Men movie showing. Too many of these new movies coming out have made me say to myself that I'd be better off watching from the comfort of my own home when it comes out on DVD.

Because of my love of cinema, I try my best to see at least one movie a month. However, I really do find it hard to justify the price of tickets, popcorn, and drinks when it involves a movie I just am not excited to see. The problem is that, in my opinion, it's just getting harder and harder to get excited about what has been coming out here lately. Perhaps these huge companies will just continue to mine the mountains for classic movie remakes until they clean them all. Or, maybe, just maybe, we will have a return to the days where small production companies can make movies that have a place in theaters that aren't scared to take a chance on an unknown story.
