Pets and Furniture Don't Mix Sometimes

Do you have a pet that lives indoors? I can't say that I have ever had a dog that lived inside the house. Most of the dogs that I have experienced as a pet owner have been larger breeds that don't like to be cooped up indoors. From Irish Sitters to Collies, they have, by and large, been outdoor dogs. When I was a child, we had a Collie who was aptly named 'Mollie.' Mollie the Collie, for those who aren't familiar with the breed, looked like Lassie except that she was colored darker. Mollie was a good dog, and since her kind has a herding mentality, she loved being outdoors most of the time. During thunderstorms, however, Mollie wanted to be with all of us because she was terrified of thunder. I will never forget all those times I would try to soothe and calm her as she whined during particularly bad storms.

When in the house, however, it seemed like it was a constant battle with Mollie and how she enjoyed sitting on the couch. As with most more substantial dogs, she could put some undo wear and tear on the living room furniture. We never had to yell or anything to get her off. After the first few scoldings, she got to where she'd jump down when she heard anyone coming into the living room. I remember hearing the familiar "clump clump" sound of her nails and paws hitting the floor. As a child, I didn't understand why my parents made a big deal and the lengths they took to make sure she stayed off the couch. Now, however, anytime I have to keep my sister's dog (who is a mastiff and has never stayed outside), I realize how quickly things can go south between the teeth and claws of an anxious dog. That dog totally ruined my sofa in one day. Upholstery and padding strewed about all over the living room floor. I am sure it had something to do with anxiety, but that didn't change the fact that I needed a new couch.
