Do You Need a New Refrigerator?

One of the worst things that can happen in a kitchen is to have a fridge suddenly quit working. Outside of disasters like a fire or something of that magnitude, I really can't think of something being so cumbersome. If your oven goes out, chances are, you can get by with cold cuts and microwaved food until you find a replacement. Any time a kitchen appliance decides to quit working, it will leave you in an inconvenienced situation, whether the machine in question is a dishwasher, an oven or stove, or a refrigerator.

If you are like me, the times you have had to deal with a fridge on the fritz happened right after a huge trip to the grocery store. Since I don't usually buy a week's worth of groceries for the family, I always feel like maybe my refrigerator just got used to only having a few meals worth of items it had to keep cold and springing a huge load on it was just too much. All jokes aside, I did find out that there are a few routine things you can do to keep your fridge from working overtime.

1) Clean the Coils

On the back of most refrigerators, there is a set of coils that help disperse the heat that the unit generates as it keeps your food cold. I know it sounds weird, but your unit can generate a lot of energy in the form of heat and the dirtier the coils on the back, the harder time it has dispersing that heat. The hotter your compressor is, the higher the chance something can go wrong. So while it may never be high on the list of priorities when cleaning your kitchen, pulling out the fridge and cleaning the coils should be a routine thing you do at least a couple times a year. Also, in a lot of home, the fridge may be in an area where it doesn't have room to "breath" so to speak. Your refrigerator or freezer should be at least one and a half to two inches from any walls or cabinetry.

2) Use Bottles of Water

In the door of your fridge, you should place a couple of 2-liter soda bottles filled with water. This action accomplishes a couple of things. Every time you open your door, heat gets in as cool air escapes. The bottles will help cool things down quickly since the water inside cools much easier than the solid food you have inside. The other thing it does is it helps keep your fridge from having to work so hard when the door is closed. Even though the whole unit is insulated, the doors are the areas where food will be hardest to keep cool and the bottles will help keep your food the temperature you want them to be.

3) Check Your Seals

The doors of your refrigerator will have gaskets that run the entire perimeter. They make a seal that helps keep warm air out and cold air inside. During any season, you can check the around your doors to see if you notice any condensation that is building up in the area. If it is, the seal is not as tight as it should be and your fridge is going to have to work overtime to achieve the temperature you have it set at. While changing the gaskets might be out of your area of expertise, it's not good to allow this to continue because mold and mildew can begin to form because of the moisture.
