How to Pick Furniture and Arrange a Small Living Room
How to Pick Furniture and Arrange a Small Living Room
Your living room is probably the most used one in the house. This statement probably rings truer when talking about the guests that visit your home. Even if it isn't the most used room, it probably is a close second. In today's world, space seems to be getting harder and harder to find. As the populations of cities grow, if people want to find roomier homes, they may have to go outside the city limits to find that wide-open space. If you are like me and you have a smaller living room, and you really aren't that interested in buying a new house, there are a few things you can do besides tearing down walls to make your space feel bigger.
Living Room Furniture Types
The main focus of most living rooms is going to revolve around the couch. If you have a smaller living room, then it doesn't make much sense to have a giant sofa. Picking a placing a lovely mid-sized sofa in your living room is the best place to start. One thing you might consider when buying a sofa is to pick one with exposed legs. These legs can give the appearance of a more open space. Also, selecting items that have clean lines will help keep the room feeling more open.
If you already have a more massive couch like a sectional, you may just have to devote an entire corner to the sofa. When you place it in the corner, it will look like one big piece and give a less cluttered look. However, if you have a backless sofa, you may want to place it in the middle of the room since you can sit either way on that type of furniture.
You will want to avoid recliners since they need much more space to use correctly. If you can't extend the legs out without having to move stuff, it may not be worth it.
Multipurpose Furniture
Ottomans are a great alternative to a coffee table. Not only can you rest your feet on them, but you can use them as extra seats if you need more places for guests to sit. A couple of upholstered ottomans can really be a game-changer when inviting company over to visit. All you need to turn them into a coffee table is a couple of wooden trays and, viola, you have a flat, sturdy place to set drinks or a centerpiece decoration.
Instead of using corner tables beside your sofa, consider using stools instead. Once again, if more seating is needed, you just have to move the decor and you have more places for guests to sit. There are all kinds of shapes and styles of stools and you can really add a nice accent to your living room by placing a couple.
Furniture Accessories
Certain decor and accessories can help give the appearance of more room. If your living room is short on windows, then try adding a couple of mirrors to the walls. One tactic you can use for placing a mirror is to hang it opposite a window. Trickery, trickery, I know, but that is the point! Also, plants are good to use if you need to soften up and corners in the room. Like mirrors, plants give the illusion of more space since people are reminded of the outdoors.
Arranging Your Furniture
How you arrange the items of furniture in your living room largely depends on the flow of traffic. Most living rooms are a thoroughfare so the last thing you want to do is impede the flow going in or out of the room. You may not be able to avoid it, but do your best to place your furniture in a way that allows people to walk freely. You should have a focal point and place your furniture accordingly. If the focal point is a TV or fireplace, then you will want to have your furniture facing it and try to put the lower profile seats closest. Luckily these days it televisions are so much easier to place since the advent of flat screens. It is almost a stable procedure to mount your flat screen on a wall if you have a small living room. After you mount it, all you have to do is place your seats so that people can see what they are watching without having to crane their neck around.
