Those Litle Devils!

I Only Looked Away for a Split Second

As parents, we do our best to look out for our children and keep them safe. The same can be said about most pet owners, as well. Sometimes, we may cross the line and spoil them a little bit... or, maybe a lot. The interesting thing about raising children and taking care of pets is that there is a dichotomy in the relationship. As mentioned before, we want to keep them safe. On the other hand, we do our best to keep our things safe from them!

Pets can make a real mess of things in a very short timeframe. From chewing shoes to chewing sofa cushions, dogs have the capability to do some damage. Cats and their claws seem to think that the couch or recliner is their personal scratching post. While some people's pets behave or are docile, some can be real terrors. You may love your dog or cat, but let's face it, sometimes they can be jerks. My cat seems to think that 3 a.m. is the perfect time to tear across the entire house and across almost all of the living room furniture. My poor couch looks 5 years older than it should.

Children are also some of the keynote speakers at the How to Make a Mess symposium. In a brilliant display of artistic prowess, my 5-year-old painted pictures on most of the dining room chairs.  I will have to tell my brother how she made use of the birthday gift he gave her. An acrylic paint set would not have been my first choice of gift to buy for a child. Even if some paint isn't involved, kids still use furniture in ways that could be described as inventive. Climbing and jumping around is fun and I enjoy seeing them play and use their imagination. However, I do understand that this is added wear and tear on what I would consider large purchases. So I have to draw the lines sometimes and try to teach them how to take care of furniture in the home.
